(Fair warning...this is long)
It's the last day of 2012. Do I even remember everything that went on this year?
I was so busy! The end of the previous year changed everything in my work world and I entered 2012 covering four (4!) sports that I didn't know much about. Field hockey, badminton, tennis and triathlon. It was a definite learning experience.
Towards the end of January I got into the NYC Half...and that's when I started training. Yep, eight weeks to get ready for a half and I had barely been running. But I switched gyms and my friend Alexa got me to the gym most mornings to get my runs in...bc it was too cold to run outside! My mom, aunt and cousin came up to NYC to support me. When I got out there on race morning, my goal was just to finish. Oh, and to beat Kelli, one of the Real Housewives of NY! Happy to say that I did pass her around mile 7. Who runs that far with their hair down?! As I was nearing the end, I noticed I was going quite a bit faster than I thought I would. And I was THIS CLOSE to breaking two hours, but I ended up running 2:00:29 I think. I saw Mary after I crossed the finish line and she gave me a hug and took my picture (thankfully they didn't tweet that out!) Oh well. I still don't consider myself a distance runner.
As the Games got closer and closer, I was brought back into track and field. And that took me to London, where I spent three fantastic, busy, exhausting, exhilarating weeks for the 2012 Olympic Games.
While in London, I was offered my current job in Houston. After a little back-and-forth, I accepted the job and we settled on Sept 3 as my start date. Which meant I had roughly two weeks once I returned from London to pack up my apartment, move all of my belonging to PA, separate out what I wanted to take to Texas and then Move. to. Texas.
My mom came along for the ride and helped me find new furniture. I had to start almost from scratch bc I came here with only what would fit in my two door honda civic. But before long she was gone and then I started work. I think in my second day my boss asked me if I wanted to run the Houston Half with him. What's that you say? Seven weeks until race day? Suuure, why not.
Somehow the Clear Lake 10 Mile got added into the mix. Worst. Race. of. my. life. It was hot and humid and the start and I was lucky to average 10 minute miles. That was also the first appearance of my ridiculous blisters. The Houston Half came up quick. I don't think I had even really done any long runs. Certainly nothing over six. On race morning, it was finally cool. I think it was actually in the 40s. I didn't have any goals. I was just going to run. I felt good the whole way. Never really tired. I didn't push it. And I think I finished somewhere around 2:04. The blisters were back and bigger than ever.
I took 10 days off completely from running. And then somehow got signed up for the 25K. What a mistake that was. I wore the shoes I ran the NYC Half in, hoping to keep the blisters at bay. But it didn't work. It was a three loop course and heading into the third loop I could feel the blister on my big toe with every step. I just wanted to cry. But I gutted it out and finished. In something like 2:37 after having averaged 9:30s for the first 10 miles. But no rest for the wicked. I went straight to my car to go home and shower bc I was going to the Texans game as a guest of ABC that day. I got there just after kickoff.
That was the last of my running until the Turkey Trot. My sister came in for Thanksgiving and we cooked our very own turkey dinner for the first time ever. But that morning I jogged the Trot with a coworker and STILL I got blisters. That did it. I think my feet actually grew when I moved here. So I went and got new shoes. Thanksgiving with Deb was great. We had SO much food. And she even went with me to Target Thursday night to go shopping. We got some great deals.
And if I'm going to be totally (slightly) honest in this year end recap, I've spent most of this year trying to get over someone that I don't want to let go.
Now it's December already. And I don't have much to tell for this month. Just A. Lot. of. Work. Trying to keep up with social media, meet my print deadlines, plan some press opportunities. As 2012 comes to a close, I will have 12 days until my first Houston Marathon. Here's hoping everything goes smoothly.
